Kwara Lawmaker Expresses Concern Over Effects Of Incessant Use Of Harmful Body Creams, Calls For Stringent Enforcement
Motion on the need to address high level of harmful body products in the markets have been sponsored by a member representing Ilorin South constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hajia Maryam Aladi.
During the debate at the plenary on Tuesday, Hajia Aladi, who expressed concern over the rising cases of health complications linked to the indiscriminate use of such products explained that most of the creams and soaps in circulation contained dangerous chemicals such which could cause organ damage, infertility, and even cancer.
She further lamented poor enforcement of existing health and safety laws, saying many of those products were openly sold in the markets without approval from NAFDAC.
In a resolution of the matter, the speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engineer Yakubu Danladi-Saliu called for stronger regulations and public awareness on the dangers of unregulated cosmetics, organic creams, and other harmful body products being sold across the state.
He stressed that agencies such as NAFDAC and the Standards Organization of Nigeria must be fully involved in monitoring, sharing critical information and providing feedback to ensure compliance.
The Speaker added that the dangers of unregulated cosmetics cannot be ignored, warning that they could posed serious risks to the health and wellbeing of citizens.
Other members who spoke on the motion described the situation as a looming public health crisis which required urgent government attention and praised Hajia Aladi for moving the motion.
