Kara Markets Controversy: LG Chairmen, Traditional Rulers Agree To Truce

Memorandum of understanding has been reached between the seven local government Chairmen in Kwara south senatorial district and thier traditional rulars to lift the closure ban earlier imposed on all Kara markets in the district.


‎This is contained in a statement made available to the public through the media and publicity section of the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo palace in Irepodun local government area of Kwara State.


‎The statement indicates that the decision took place during an emergency meeting directed by the state governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq which was held at the weekend at the palace of Olupo of Ajase-Ipo.


‎According to the statement, both parties have unanimously agreed that all markets in Kwara South shall operate between the hours of 6am and 6pm every market days.     


‎It also states that all stakeholders involved shall make consultations with leadership of the Fulanis and Bororos in the district.                     

‎The five hours meeting held behind closed door had in attendance local government chairmen of Ifelodun, Irepodun, Isin, Ekiti and Oke-Ero.

‎The statement reports that Offa and Oyun local government Chairmen joined the conversation online.

‎The traditional rulers in attendance include Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Olosi of Osi, Olupako of Share, Alofa of Ilofa, Olusin of Isanlu-Isin, Elerin of Erin-Ile who was represented by Onira of Ira.

‎Following spate of insecurity in the district, the local government chairmen in  Kwara south had earlier issued a ban on commercial activities in all Kara markets until further notice.

‎On a contrary opinion, Ajase-Ipo Descendants Union, through the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Barrister Ismail Yahya Alebiosu countered the directived in a statement, noting that commercial activities would continue but only on official market days.

‎The statement from both quarters generated widespread controversy on social media and public gatherings.
