Ogun State Govt Engages NURTW Members On Traffic Rules
ABEOKUTA – Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OGSEMA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has engaged members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in a one-day workshop on traffic rules to prevent road crashes during the rainy season.
Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Efuwape, who spoke at the workshop on Saturday stated that road accidents during the season were primarily caused by drivers not obeying traffic rules.
Mrs. Efuwape who was represented by the Acting Director, Ogun State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Soji Durojaiye, spoke on the topic titled ‘Public Sensitisation on Road Accidents’.
She said that the state government decided to engage the members of NURTW through the workshop to save both motorists and passengers from untimely death caused by road accidents, especially during the rainy season.
Efuwape urged motorists to take precautionary measures by obeying rules and regulations on safe driving and shun any intake that could lead to loss of life.
She noted that the state government remained committed to safety, as shown by the number of roads that had been rehabilitated and reconstructed across the state, stating that such a gesture by the government would be pointless if drivers failed to obey traffic rules.
“Let me say it clearly, it is only a cautious driver who commences his journey from a particular location and gets to his final destination safely that can best be described as a driver, and one sure way of achieving this is obeying traffic rules, particularly those on speed limits at all times”.
Also speaking, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Commander Akinwumi Fasakin, represented by the Corps’ Head of Operations, Dr. Adelaja Ogungbemi, emphasised that numerous crashes occur on the roads during the rainy season, primarily due to the carelessness of drivers.
“It will not be out of place for drivers to always park by the roadside when they get to flooded areas of the road, especially when rain is falling and wait to allow the rain to subside before proceeding on their journey”.
On his part, the Director of Ogun State Fire Service, Engr. Abdulfatai Adefala, urged drivers to ensure they have appropriate and functional fire extinguishers in their vehicles so they can be useful in the event of fire incidents.
Speaking on behalf of others, two participants, Messrs. Kabiru Sobajo and Towolawi John, expressed gratitude to the state government for the workshop, describing the sessions as engaging and invaluable, with lessons learned that they promised to share with others.
